Overview

Our Education Management MA is intended for education professionals who aspire to positions of management and leadership in education. Focused on the challenges faced by educational institutions around the world today, the programme is designed to develop the expertise and decision-making capabilities required of those tasked with leading modern educational organisations. The programme has relevance across a range of education sectors and provider types, including state, independent and NGO providers. Participants engage critically with current debates and the latest research to develop their professional understanding of complex real-world problems in the field of education management. You will benefit from this course no matter the level at which you teach, lecture or organise educational provision.

Course detail

The course takes a keenly critical perspective towards the management of educational institutions understood in terms of their cultural, political and social contexts. Engaging with fundamental issues, from the very aims of education to the management of human resources, the course is designed to equip participants with the understanding and decision-making capabilities required to deal with the demands placed on educational institutions today. Module options provide the opportunity to engage with a range of related themes: from educational leadership to teacher development, from best practice in the techniques of business management to the latest research into school effectiveness and improvement.

Teaching and assessment

For each 30-credit module you will have 20 hours of lectures and seminars, and we will expect you to undertake 280 hours of independent study. There are 10.5 hours of academic study skills workshops and for your dissertation you will receive nine hours of one-to-one supervision and 24 hours of research methods lectures. You will also undertake 567 hours of independent study for the dissertation module. Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work. We will use a delivery method that will ensure students have a rich, exciting experience from the start. Face to face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology so that students also experience elements of digital learning and assessment. The 30-credit taught modules are normally assessed by a 6,000-word assignment, but assessment methods do vary and will depend on the optional modules selected. The 60-credit dissertation is assessed by an extended piece of writing of 16,000 words. You are permitted to take up to 40 of the 90 optional credits from outside of the course, at the discretion of the Programme Director.
