Overview

Working as a children’s nurse, no two days are ever the same. At King’s, we equip you with the skills you need to deliver excellent care to children, young people and their families, build relationships, and understand how to use research. Whether it’s decision making or medication management, we cover the topics you’ll depend on every day caring for children, young people and their families. We put your skills to the test during your placements with your host trust. Course detail

The overall aims of the course are to enable graduates to acquire advanced understanding, knowledge, skills and professional values in children’s nursing to enable them to develop, deliver, lead, evaluate and research healthcare practice. In addition, the course aims to ensure that nurses who graduate are skilled, competent, compassionate professionals who have satisfied the academic and clinical requirements and standards stipulated in the NMC standards of proficiency and the academic requirements of King’s College London for the award of a Master’s degree. Graduating students will possess the knowledge, skills and values to perform competently in the nursing care of children, young people and their families and carers in a range of settings. Placement opportunities in hospital and community ensure you experience the breadth of nursing care undertaken by a children’s nurse.

Teaching and assessment

The course includes an equal balance of theoretical learning and clinical placements with partner healthcare providers including leading NHS Trusts and private and voluntary organisations. The course is full-time, and you will be working shift patterns similar to that of Registered Nurses. A variety of coursework, written and online exams are used to assess academic and practice learning. Clinical placement/outcomes are assessed via the completion of the Pan London Practice Assessment Document and are also recorded in the On-Going Achievement Record. Clinical hours are recorded and must be achieved as required. Numeracy is also assessed and must achieve a 100 per centage pass mark.

Career prospects

Graduates who qualify from our courses also gain professional registration as a Children’s Nurse from the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Many of our qualifying nurses go on to further study or gain employment in prominent London NHS Trusts, while others choose to work elsewhere in the UK and abroad.
