The Advanced Architectural Design MSc provides the resources for you to gain further skills in architectural design.

About this course

Our MSc Advanced Architectural Design is a degree course for international designers to enhance their design and research skills in the environment of one of the UK’s leading Schools of Architecture. The course helps you consolidate your own identity as a designer, and develop your own distinctive specialisms through research-led design, in a world where successful architects increasingly have to be specialists as well as generalists. Our aim is to help you become a leading architect in the profession.

Property Development pathway

The Property Development pathway is set up for designers. Architects bring distinctive skills to property development as they are able to rapidly test plots for their potential and devise innovative solutions for making the most of sites. However, designers rarely lead such development schemes and often lack the knowledge and skills to do so. This pathway addresses this knowledge gap.

In your first semester you'll be introduced to the following areas:

town and country planning law and its use as a tool of environmental management
the mechanisms used in planning law to structure development
the law on development control and the impact of environmental management techniques and human rights legislation on the practice and law of planning
key themes and issues in relation to policy and regulation surrounding development
the planning system and the institutional and governance framework within which it operates, as well as its political nature
planning frameworks, their evolution and the relationship between development plans and development control
current debates about how the planning system is developing and changing
the various stakeholders in the planning process and their rights
general principles of investment and the creation of value as well as direct and indirect methods of investing in real estate
various financing techniques for individual property development projects and other real estate investments as well as how risk and reward can be shared
the skills needed to conduct independent academic research
methods of evaluation and analysis pertinent to undertaking research, as well as appropriate research strategies for your chosen areas of research in dissertation, or design thesis

The second semester will cover:

knowledge and skills that enable you to explore and test development priorities through design
iterations of architectural form in terms of site loading and development potential
testing of architectural design values against development values and engaging in appropriate decision-making
evaluating and applying a comprehensive range of visual, oral and written media to test, analyse, critically appraise and explain design proposals
producing architectural/urban design scheme(s) for specific site(s) where architectural design skills are used to test and explore site loadings for development potential
the practical, legal and professional dimensions of surveying in relation to planning and property development
key issues in the measurement and valuation of landed property and the production and understanding of property development appraisals to determine economic viability
a variety of economic concepts that have a significant role in the work of planners
a broad range of economic tools and modelling techniques and their application in a planning environment
a detailed theoretical and practical understanding of the economics of the planning and development process.
