The major in molecular biology and biochemistry offers a course of study in which traditional and modern biochemistry are integrated with studies in molecular biology. In addition to coursework, you will conduct independent research projects in molecular biology and biochemistry in laboratories on campus. You will be prepared for graduate studies in molecular biology and biochemistry and related fields, entry into professional schools in medicine or other health professions, or employment in industries (e.g., biotechnology, pharmaceuticals) in which molecular biology and biochemistry skills are in demand.

Current areas of study by the department’s faculty include understanding the role of chromatin in transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, DNA replication and transposition, protein folding and molecular recognition, circadian rhythm, signal transduction, cell cycle control, and cell death and development.

Options/Concentrations

Students must choose between one of two course options for the major.

Course Option I is for students with a strong background in math who may be pursuing research and graduate work in the physical biosciences. This course option requires a year of physical chemistry courses offered by the Chemistry Department. A prerequisite for physical chemistry is multivariable calculus. If you take this option with 12 credits or more of research, you are required to take one molecular biology and biochemistry elective. Students with less than 12 credits of research are required to take two molecular biology and biochemistry electives in addition to the physical chemistry and calculus courses. Note: Students taking Course Option I fulfill the requirements for a minor in chemistry.

Course Option II is for students with broad interests in molecular biology and biochemistry. If you pursue this option with 12 credits or more of research, you are required to take three molecular biology and biochemistry electives. Students with less than 12 credits of research are required to take four molecular biology and biochemistry electives.

The MBB Department offers an undergraduate course of study in which traditional and modern biochemistry are integrated with studies in molecular biology. In addition to coursework, all MBB undergraduate majors conduct independent research projects in molecular biology and biochemistry in a laboratory on campus. This course of study prepares students for graduate studies in molecular biology and biochemistry and related fields, entry into professional schools in medicine or other health professions, or employment in industries (e.g., biotechnology, pharmaceuticals) in which molecular biology and biochemistry skills are in demand. The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (MBB) has 22 faculty that combine molecular, biochemical, genetic, structural and cell biological approaches to study a diverse array of fundamental biological problems. Current areas of study include understanding the role of chromatin in transcriptional regulation, RNA processing, DNA replication and transposition, protein folding and molecular recognition, circadian rhythm, signal transduction, cell cycle control, cell death and development.
