Binghamton University’s nationally accredited Department of Music offers the Master of Music (MM) and the Master of Music in Opera degree programs. The former is best suited for music professionals and educators with various concentrations. The latter trains young artists for a career in opera. The Tri-Cities Opera provides the opera students with a professional resident artist program, allowing for immense growth in personal, professional and creative endeavors through performing with TCO. Prospective students are encouraged to apply early for a limited number of assistantships, scholarships and awards. Our Master of Music program consists of five concentrations: Composition, Conducting, History and Literature, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance. There is also a separate Opera track for those who seek special focus on the theatrical opportunities of music. Whichever path you pursue, we have over thirty experienced faculty to illuminate the subject and open you up to new experiences. We have a symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, and jazz ensemble, as well as three choral groups and an African Dance/drumming ensemble. The graduate music program is small; students receive personal attention from faculty and quality performance opportunities. Our graduates have gone on to perform in major opera houses around the world.

To be eligible for graduate study, you must: Provide a complete set of your undergraduate (and, if applicable, graduate) transcripts showing one of the following: You have earned a bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university; You are within one academic year of earning a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university; You are eligible to apply as part of a memorandum of understanding between your current institution and Binghamton University. Have earned, at minimum, one of the following: A 3.0 GPA over your entire undergraduate career; A 3.0 GPA during last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits of your undergraduate degree, with most courses graded regularly (not as "pass/fail"); A 3.0 GPA in a graduate degree, with most courses graded regularly (not as "pass/fail"); In consideration of the different grading scales used around the world, each academic department evaluates international transcripts to determine on a case-by-case basis whether they demonstrate one of the above requirements; IELTS: The Graduate School requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no band below 5.0; TOEFL: The Graduate School requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the Internet-based test; PTE Academic: The Graduate School requires a minimum PTE Academic score of 53.
