Programme overview

Quantum technologies are set to revolutionise society in many ways: from creating new types of computers to solve very difficult problems, very quickly, to making uncrackable communications systems and sensors that operate beyond conventional limits. The University of Bristol has been pioneering in this worldwide effort for more than 15 years with an approach that uses light and optoelectronic technologies to implement the required devices, circuits and systems.

On this course you’ll gain a deep understanding of the design, fabrication and use of the next generation of integrated circuits, sub-systems and systems that combine optics, electronics and quantum engineering for applications in communications, computing, sensing, and healthcare.

You’ll be based in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, one of the leading research-intensive departments in the UK with strong links to the Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol, a hub for internet research addressing grand societal and industrial challenges.

Sharing units with the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training you’ll be taught within the world leading Quantum Engineering Technology Labs (QETLabs) and graduate with highly desirable and emerging skills in optoelectronic and quantum information technologies.

Careers

This innovative MSc aims to train a new generation of engineers to work in a range of companies developing quantum technologies, from corporate giants such as Google, Microsoft, Intel and IBM to start-ups originating in Bristol such as KETS Quantum Security, PsiQ, QLM and FluoretiQ.

You’ll also gain excellent preparation to further your studies with a PhD in quantum technologies and successful graduates will have the opportunity to apply to the Quantum Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training.

To be considered for admission to a master's degree programme at the University of Bristol, the minimum requirement for entry is an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree that is equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree (also known as a 2:1). Applicants who hold a four-year bachelor's (honours) degree from a prestigious university with a minimum of 78% will be considered for admission to a master's degree. Students need to have IELTS 6.0 overall with either listening or speaking at 6.5, with no skill below 6.0.
