The Department of Political Science and International Relations offers both master’s and doctoral degrees. The graduate program is a PhD focused program consisting of coursework during the first six semesters followed by dissertation research and writing. A limited number of students interested in a terminal MA degree will be admitted. The MA degree is a two-year, 38 credit program. Students admitted for the MA but who wish to pursue the PhD degree may apply to the PhD program during their second year of the graduate program. The PhD program is a 62 credit program.

Graduate study in the department includes an opportunity to study across subfields in the discipline including International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Politics, and Political Theory. Students get a broad education in the field of Political Science and are equipped with the theoretical and methodological skills to develop and execute their own research projects. Students have the opportunity to work with a diverse faculty embracing a variety of approaches and engaged in issues spanning global and domestic politics. With departmental strengths that include global governance, gender and politics, political psychology, public opinion, conflict resolution and post-conflict societies, and international relations theory we offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of politics and many of the most pressing issues of governance in the twenty-first century.

Applicants to a University of Delaware graduate program must possess (or be in the final year of completing) a U.S. equivalent bachelor’s degree. The University requires an official paper-based TOEFL score of at least 550 or at least 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) for an applicant to be considered for admission. The University expects a minimum score of 18 on the Internet-based Speaking Test. IELTS score - 6.5.
