Develop your innovation and analytical skills to become an effective manager with an engineering firm.

All new technologies, products and services require careful management to take them from the concept stage to commercial success. This course will enable you to operate within a strategically important part of professional engineering, irrespective of the technical area.

The course is taught by internationally leading experts and practising managers to ensure you master not only the theory of management tools and techniques, but also how they are applied in real engineering situations.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council.

Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.

Course content

You'll develop a thorough grounding in aspects of management relevant to the technical manager, creative and innovative thinking, and a deep understanding of how to apply management thinking to state-of-the-art technology issues.

A major group project towards the end of the course will help you gain practical experience of skills applicable to management of engineering functions within companies, and to develop your research, team working, problem solving, personal effectiveness and communication skills for academic and professional purposes.

Careers and skills

You'll leave equipped to follow one of three broad career paths: working in industry as a first or second line engineering manager; starting your own technology or engineering based company; or progressing into a research focussed career. For a postgraduate taught course such as a Masters, you would normally?need?a Bachelors degree from a recognised institution in a relevant subject. The score you will?need depends on which university you attended in China and which subject you are applying to. Typically you would need at least the equivalent to a UK upper second class honours degree, however some courses will accept lower second class honours degrees. Actual requirements will vary by course: A score of 80 to 85 per cent is considered comparable to a UK 2:1; A score of 75 to 80 per cent is considered comparable to a UK 2:2. If you're a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability.
