Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and her anthropology professor.
Student: You know the topic I submitted for my research proposal, the historical origins of the Berber people of North Africa? Well, I started writing and it just wasn’t working for me. I’m pretty much going nowhere with the research.
Professor: I’m sorry to hear that. It was such an original choice. What happened?
Student: Well, I found plenty of information about Berber’s society in present day North Africa. But even though the evidence points to Berber civilization probably dating back five thousand years, there’s no real scholarly consensus about their ancestry.
Professor: That’s true. We don’t have a consensus. Feelings about their origins range from parts of Europe to the Middle East. Part of the problem is that the Berber language wasn’t traditionally a written one so there aren’t any historical records written by the Berbers themselves that we can trace back to antiquity. As a result, it’s hard to find any direct evidence of their origin.
Student: Yeah. The ancient Egyptians and Romans mentioned them a bit. I thought it was great when the graduate assistant, Raymond, recommended this topic to me. But along with the opposing theories, the main thing is that I just don’t feel I will get enough material to base a paper on. Maybe I should have talked to you first, but I went ahead and wrote a totally new proposal. I hope that’s okay.
Professor: Yes, of course. But I wish we would’ve had this talk before you veered off into this new direction. You know, even though historians haven’t come to a consensus, we could’ve worked together and I’m sure you could’ve written a good paper acknowledging of course that disagreements about the Berber’s origin exist.
Student: Oh, okay.
Professor: And I also would have directed you to Anthrotopics as a place to look.
Student: Anthrotopics? It rings a bell.
Professor: I’m sure I mentioned it in class. It’s a good website for scholarly sources on anthropological classes. Check it out. Maybe you could come back to the Berbers for your second paper.
Student: Okay. I will think about it.
Professor: But in the meantime, you said you have something else?
Student: Yes, it’s about nomadic populations and schooling in parts of Africa like how the whole issue of children attending school is being addressed in modern nomadic communities.
Professor: That’s certainly is a timely topic. In fact, I just read a recent study on this subject. African governments and international agencies are struggling to figure out how to deal with this issue.
Student: I’ve brought you a copy of the proposal and this time I went ahead and did some research first so I know the material is there. It’s not a historical topic. Is that a problem?
Professor: Well, the assignment was to write on an anthropological problem related to an African community. The topic doesn’t necessarily have to be historical.

TASK 2
1. Some think children should take part in sports team to be more socially developed.do you agree with or disagree with the statement?
In general, I think I agree that students who do group sports are going to be more social than those who do solo sports. First off, just people that are more social naturally are going to be more drawn to group sports and those who are less social naturally are going to be drawn to solo sports, probably.
On top of that, I think just doing group sports makes you more social because you have to learn how to work with other people, you have to learn how to get through problems and play together as a team. And that builds social skills and builds a desire to be more social, I think.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement that parents should discourage children to join some competitive activities, like sports or entertainment?
I disagree that parents should prevent their children from choosing career paths that are unlikely to be successful. Before considering the results of prohibition, it is important to realize that parents who do this are not being good parents. Ultimately, being a good parent means giving children as much information and preparation as possible for acting independently in the word. Ultimately, children must be able to choose their own paths in life. They must also accept the consequences and responsibilities of their choices. Additionally, attempting and failing to achieve a dream is not bad. The experience of the attempt is itself, a teacher, and children who aim for something they care about may find a career closer to something that they love doing.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It is never too late for an old people to receive high education and to get a university degree. Use specific reasons to support your answer.
I definitely agree with the statement.
For one thing, each one has the right to get the university degree. No matter who you are, the youngster or the middle age or the elderly, as long as people have the dream to be better, they should be encouraged to receive better education.
For one thing, the educational benefit is conducive to the society. Imagine one 66-year-old grandpa getting the master degree in one university, although he may be retired, yet staying at home, he can educate his grandchildren on how to study, how to live a decent life, how to be happy and so on. His grandchildren may get better guidance.
4. Is a regular job better than a flexible one? Give your reasons.
I think a regular job is better than a flexible one. Firstly, a regular job leads to a regular life, which makes people comfortable physically and mentally. For example, getting up and going to bed on time are beneficial for us to build and maintain living clocks. In addition, working in a fixed time restrains people’s behaviors externally. In other words, people have no other choice but work at a certain period, however, working at home with a flexible time requires people to restrain themselves internally, which can be very hard and as a result, working efficiency is decreasing.
5. Some people believe old people should not take risk and participate adventurous events as the young people. Do you agree? Why?
I agree with the statement that people should adventure as they grow older. To start with, adventures will trigger creativeness and motivation, which is of significant importance for our work, especially for artists and people who are in the designing field. Because you know, during our adventure, we will meet with different people and culture. They will bring us totally different ways of seeing the world and inspirations for our work. Besides, adventure is a way to relax ourselves. Modern people especially people in the metropolis are stuck in the work. What we need is to get away from the city life for a while and enjoy the adventurous journey to best relax ourselves.
6. Do you like to decorate your room with objects like paintings and pictures or leave the wall blank and simple?
Well, personally I would decorate my room with simple things rather than lots of pictures.
For starts, I would like the style of my room to be tasteful and restrained so I can feel more relaxed and it’ll be easier for me to concentrate. Simple decorations on the ceiling and walls can calm me down after a long day of work. Plus, they can also help me focus on schoolwork especially before important exams when I need more time to study on my own.
Besides, too many pictures can be disturbing and hard to clean as well. I remember the first time when I visited one of my classmates’ rooms and I was literally shocked by the large number of pictures on her walls. They don’t match the style of her room at all and seemed to have pretty much dust on the frames, which later I knew was due to her lack of time to clean them up.
7. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Friends can maintain friendship even if they have disagreements.
I agree that friendships can be maintained in the presence of disagreement. True friends should not only support each other, but also challenge each other. When we disagree with our friends on something, as long as it’s not about strict moral principles, we open our minds to different ways of thinking. For example, last week I had an argument with a good friend about playing video games. I didn’t like video games at all, but he gave me a few good reasons why video games are good for our brains and stuff. I still don’t like video games. But I get what he was saying and stop judging gamers. True friendships only become stronger in the face of challenges. So not only can we maintain our friendship in times of disagreement but we also improve it.
8. Leaving some time for group discussion in class is beneficial for study. Do you agree or not?
As far as I am concerned, leaving some time for group discussion in class has much benefit. First of all, it enables us to exchange ideas directly after teacher’s instruction, which helps improve our learning efficiency and producing new ideas during the course of class. If we get confused, we can have someone to ask or discuss with at once. Moreover, when we discuss and argue with our partners, group discussion also provides us a way to reduce negative emotions and improve interpersonal communication skills. Talking with others, exchanging ideas, discussing and even debating has been proved as efficient ways to reduce negative feelings.
9. Some college students like to spend their time free time studying another course or doing schoolwork. Others like to join a club and enjoy club activities. Which do you think is better and why?
Well, I'd like to spend my free time joining a club and participating in club activities. Because I think I've already spent enough time on studying during the lectures and seminars. It's not necessary to devote my spare time to learn another subject. Then my life would be pretty boring and tiring. However, joining a club could enrich my university life and fully relax myself. For example, I took part in the singing club in my university, and performing in choir concerts provided me with a lot of beautiful memories. I also made many friends in the club, whom I still contact with after graduation. So I'd prefer to join a club and take part in more activities.
10. Do you agree or disagree that to succeed we need to make enemies?
I disagree, it’s not necessarily the case. First, there’re many definitions for success. To be successful is to lead a life that you intend to and enjoy, not a life necessarily with a lot of money. Say I feel that my mom is quite successful because she lives a happy life, but she obviously doesn’t have any enemies. And even for the people who are successful in career and with high social status, the effort they’ve spent along the way could be quite legitimate that wouldn’t have induced any serious conflict with others’ interests. Surely there must have been competition, but competition is common in any aspect of life which doesn’t always bring out hostile feelings. So basically,I think the statement stands without solid ground.
