Astronomy

Biology

標題:good bacteria

標題:increase density of land use

Professor: Karen: Professor:

Oh hi, Karen, what can I do for you?

Well, I might just start writing that paper that’s due next week

Okay.

And I’m thinking I’d like to write it on the classroom observations I’ve been doing.

What level are you observing? Fourth grade.

Okay. That sounds fine. Lots of students write about their classroom observations.

But before I start, I want to check to see if I’m on the right track with my observations.

Okay.

Okay. As I’ve said, I’ve been observing a fourth grade class and the teacher follows a progressive approach to teaching, so I thought I’d write about a mathematics lesson that I observed last week, how it fits in with that approach.

Okay. What can you tell me about the progressive approach?

It’s about accommodating each student’s individual learning style, right?

Right.

style, so instead of having one planned format or lesson for the whole class, the teacher has each child work at their own pace on their own project in a way that works best for them.

Professor:

Professor:

Okay, good. Now, how does this work in the lesson you’ve observed?

Well, first the teacher asked six students to find a math problem that interested them, or that they found difficult and to write it on the board. That surprised me, because it seemed more like a traditional teacher-led activity than a progressive one.

But who chose the math problem?

The students did, which I eventually realized made it the kind of activity you would find in a progressive classroom.

And what was the rest of the class doing?

They were helpers. If a student wasn’t sure how to solve the problem, they asked one of the helpers to join them at the board and well, help.

And did they?

Yeah, and if both students got stuck they could ask another student so it ended up with groups of three or four kids working together to solve a math problem. I could see the teacher was getting the students started, but the students then directed themselves and worked together to come up with the answer.

Which is very much a part of what progressive education is all about. In that way, the curriculum, or what is being learned, centers around what the learners are interested in. What other elements of progressive education did you observe?

Karen:

Well, the students were learning in groups so they were learning social skills like negotiation and the activity was designed so no one felt like a failure. In the end, all the problems were solved successfully and all the kids seemed feel a sense of accomplishment. They were smiling. From what I can tell, the activity met the kid’s social needs and their emotional needs as well. It was pretty cool to watch.

1. Some people prefer to write many short assignments for a semester, other prefer to write one or two long assignments for a semester. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

Personally, I prefer to write several short assignments instead of one or two long assignments. To begin with, I don't want to be overly stressed out when the big assignments are about to be due, long assignments are likely to be tough to deal with, actually, as the saying goes, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket", by writing short assignments, I can spread the risk, also I will not be worn out, since short assignments are much easier to deal with. By doing assignment this way, I can avoid serious time conflict when other big projects are due at the same time together with the big assignments.

2. Some schools require students to finish a reading list during school breaks. Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this requirement.

Well, finishing a reading list can help students to learn different ways to express themselves, you know usually the reading list includes the classics of all times, most of the books are authored by the greatest writers, who might use different rhetoric to voice their opinions. However, the required reading list might not be suitable for every kid since kids have their likes and dislikes when it comes to the topics of these books. If they find it boring and meaningless, they might not even read the books they like in the future.

3. University education is more important now than it was in the past.

Personally, I couldn’t agree more with this statement, advanced education is more important than before. University education provides students with the tools and skills that are essential for them to be successful in their future career. In today’s competitive job market, without a decent college education one cannot find a decent job. Additionally, college educations can help to develop morality and values to live a good life and build up character to seek the truth and I think these qualities are very important to have in order to be a mature person.

4. Which of the following do you think is the most effective way of studying?

A Studying alone B Working with others in a group C Tasking assignments

Well, I think it the best way to learn is through working with others in a group. I am the kind of person who find theory based subjects are hard to learn, like math, physics and chemistry and I need to discuss with my friends in order to concentrate on the subject. They might offer some incisive approach for me to understand the material better. Additionally, it also helps to learn other subject like sociology and psychology and stuff. cuz, through discussion we can share our personal experience to shed some light on the stuff we are learning, I might have some new perspective and insights on the some psychological concepts.

5. Some people like to take less informative but interesting lectures, others like to take boring but more content rich lectures. Which do you prefer?

Well, personally I like to attend less informative but interesting lectures. Frankly, most of the lectures on campus are academic oriented and lots of topics are pretty boring, consequently one finds it hard to concentrate for a long time. However, if the lecture is interesting, I am motived to learn more about the topic. If the lecture itself is pretty boring, there will never be a chance for me to focus on the it for a long time. Eventually, even though it is very informative, however, I will not learn anything.

1. What can we do to reduce air pollution? Give examples and details in your answer.

There are lots of ways for the city to reduce air pollution. Firstly, they can cut down the usage of cars and other vehicles, thus the car exhaust can be reduced. The decision makers should invest more money to improve public transportation. Secondly, the government should put forward some policies to punish factories who discharge lots of waste into the air, for example, they can impose a heavy tax on these factories. Plus, they can subsidize the environment conscious companies that use renewable energies like natural gas, wind power and nuclear power.

2. What is the most important quality the teacher should have?

I would say the most important quality of a good teacher is knowledge. As known to all, the teacher's job is to impart knowledge and enlighten the students' creativity. A teacher is supposed to be an expert in his or her own field, they should also have some knowledge in other fields, cuz lots of subject are related with other fields for example, geopolitical science deals with geography and politics, behavioral economics is about psychology and economics. Most important of all, a knowledgeable teacher will be more popular than a teacher with very limited knowledge.

3. Talk about an activity you enjoyed doing with your family when you were a child, explain your answer in details.

My most memorable experience when I was a kid is to take the vacation on the beach with the whole family. Since, my home town is not far from a coastal city in China. We went there, enjoyed bathing in the sun while appreciating the beautiful scenery alone the seashore, like the blossom and palm trees and stuff. We tried out the sea food like salmon, tuna and even some lobsters. Apart from that, the most exciting stuff I did when visiting this nice and beautiful city was sea and water activities like snorkeling, wakeboarding and even jet skiing with my dad. But I remembered that I got a little sun though.

4. Describe a type of movie you don't like.

Well, this is a very interesting question and I have never thought about it. Generally, I like all kinds of movie that is interesting and relaxing. Since I am a person who likes funny stuff, so I guess I don't like horror movies. The only reason I watch movie is to get some relaxation and enjoy my free time, however whenever I watch horror movies, I feel I am so disturbed and very uncomfortable, and my immune system might suffer from the creepy scenes and music, and I might get a serious cold after a horror movie, that is why I am not a big fan of this kind of movie.

5. Which of the following has the greatest impact on students' life?

A. electronic books B. smart phones C. online courses

Personally speaking, I think that the smartphone has the greatest impact on students’ life. First, it helps us to learn much more efficiently; smart phones are kind of indispensable, like very time when I come across a new word or terminology, I always take out my phone to look it up from e-dictionary or get connected online to search for its background information; second, it helps us to unwind in a better way, like after long classes, we always take out our phones to listen to some music or watch some interesting video clips to have fun and blow off steam, so when we get back to study, we could have much higher efficiency.
