1. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Patience is usually not a good strategy? We should take action now rather than later.
To be honest, I can't understand the question. It must be true that patience is at odds with taking action now? It's wrong to equate being patient with just sitting back. In practice, we are supposed to have patience in managing a large range of things in many aspects. It's no exaggeration to say that only with patience can we take action persistently, enduringly and unhesitatingly.
When we associate with others, patience is an essential element of keeping a permanent and harmonious relationship. Take myself for example, I have a little sister whose study status is below my expectation. My action is helping her with her homework and answering her questions all the time, starting long ago and never to stop. It's a neat illustration of how patience is a good strategy. It's also a case in point that one of my friends who can always settle my moronic questions without impatience and our friendship is long lasting.
By the same token, patience is an essential ingredient of personal development. Patience gives us a competitive edge when we are confronted with the thorny issue that takes up a lot of time and energy. For instance, once I was asked to read a long English essay about history more than one hundred pages saturated with unfamiliar words and an oral examination for it would follow in the next week. It nearly drove me crazy as I moved slowly and I had plenty of other assignments to do. But finally I achieved and maintained a patient attitude and it went a long way fulfilling my potential.
In addition, taking action now rather than being patient may put us at risk in some case. It is unwarranted to act immediately without thinking as we may be likely to fall prey to impulse. It is the fact that in retrospect, we often regret we have done sometimes after thinking it over.
For those reasons, we can safely conclude that patience is usually a good strategy and of course, not a panacea for our life.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Famous entertainers and athletes deserve more privacy than they do now. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Celebrities, such as entertainers, actors and athletes have become an important part of average people's daily life. As the increasingly sufficient material condition, people have more leisure time to spend hundreds of money in listening a famous singer's concert, watching a football superstar's match, or just buy the biography of their idol. In this way, celebrities are exposed to the public far more than common people, which leads to the question, whether their privacy should be protected? I think it is a must.
First, their privacy is so easy to be published due to the advanced technology, especially in the information explosive era. Everywhere they go, there would be monitors from each direction. Monitors are installed at streets, parks and squares. It's main use is to protect people from criminal, but on the other hand, it provide condition to get more access to celebrities, so they have to dressed up such as wearing sunglasses or hiding themselves in heavy coats to evade from monitors. Moreover, advanced camera make it possible for taking photos from distant area, so celebrities were always taken photos secretly while they were eating in the restaurant and they even didn’t detect it until the photos were published in the newspaper or entertainment website.
Second, average individuals, especially young people tend to be more interested in celebrities' privacy nowadays. Maybe it's because of the well developed economy, they needn't worry about their own livelihood and have more leisure time to indulge their curiosity. To illustrate this, I can think of no better example than the fact that the famous basketball superstar Yao Ming, who was eating in an small restaurant, which resulted in hundreds of people come to see him, the crowded people filled in all the space of the restaurant, they even caused the traffic congestion at that area. This typical phenomenon substantially bothers both Yao Ming himself and the ordinary life of average people.
Admittedly, as the celebrities, they should be regarded as the model, in that millions of people are watching them, and serve them as their idol. So exposing some privacy such as their lifestyle or their hardship history appropriately may encourage young people to study and mimic them. However, this should be limited in some sense, or it could cause damage to the society and celebrities themselves because of the two reasons discussed above.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? There is never a reason to be impolite/rude to another person.
In Japan, people bow their heads as a sign of being polite. In Germany, men kiss each other’s cheeks in demonstration of the same. No matter how big or small, acts of politeness form a huge part of our lives. As much as possible everyone wants to be always polite. But should this always be the case?
The golden rule states that we should treat others the way we want them to treat us. Thus, most people, through the course of their day-to-day interactions with other persons, strive to be polite. However, I believe there are always exceptions to the rule. Would you still be polite to someone who is trying to rob you? Would you still be polite to your boss who always humiliates you in the office even if there’s no reason to?
Respect begets respect. The same can be said as well for politeness. In our efforts of showing to the world that we are indeed good individuals, we sometimes tend to forget that being polite should not be easily dispensed. There is such a thing as personal respect. How can other people realize that you are a person who should be respected if you readily accommodate them even if they’re not treating you the same way? If this happens to me, I would certainly show a limited but definite level of impoliteness, not because I am really like that but because I deserve to be shown politeness too.
Let’s look at the big picture. 1984, a novel by George Orwell, depicts an abusive, certainly impolite, government composed of well, impolite officials. The reason they came to power is quite simple. The citizens were very gullible to the former’s propaganda and advances. Cut the long story short, an act of unnecessary politeness lead to the fall of that society’s standards and existence. If only people in that novel had been “necessarily” impolite. In reality, this is certainly also the case. Look around us. Many are suffering from problems that, in one way or another, were brought by being polite at all times—unfair job opportunities, rude neighbors, opportunistic friends.
At the core of every person, I sincerely believe that every man regardless of creed, status, or nationality, has a universal concept of what constitutes politeness. It is but fair to say that we should effectively respect and be polite to ourselves prior to being polite to others. That being said, under applicable situations like the ones stated above, there is a time and place that being impolite to another person is necessary.
